Maintaining good oral hygiene is critical to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. This means cleaning your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, visiting the dentist and hygienist regularly and limiting the amount of sugar in your diet.

Brush your teeth

Brushing is the most effective way to remove plaque. Here are some tips for getting the most benefit from brushing your teeth.

Brush at least twice a day. Make sure you brush every surface of every tooth. To do this properly can take longer than you think. Most dentists would recommend around two minutes.
Use fluoride toothpaste to protect against decay.
Use a toothbrush with a small head and synthetic bristles.
Start at one side of your mouth and move round to the other side, brushing all the tooth surfaces thoroughly.
Pay particular attention to the gumline, angling the bristles into the crevice where the gums meet the teeth.
Replace your toothbrush every month.

Some people prefer an electric toothbrush. There is some evidence that certain types of electric toothbrush are more efficient at removing plaque than brushing by hand. However, the thoroughness of the cleaning is much more important than what type of brush you use. You must clean every surface of every tooth and a small toothbrush, whether electric or not, will help.

Dental floss or inter-dental brushes remove plaque and particles of food from between the teeth and under the gumline. These are areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. Correct technique is important, so ask for advice from your dentist or hygienist.

We've all had a loose tooth before. They can become annoying, getting in the way of eating, drinking and everything else that involves teeth! Sometimes you can't take it anymore, and you decide to pull it out. But how? What are some painless, easy, quick ways to pull that tooth? Read this article and find out!

Remember to make sure the tooth is very loose and is ready to come out. If you pull the tooth out too early you will have a hole in your gums and you won't be able to eat without hurting your gums and getting little cuts! If the tooth is ready, keep on reading, if not, come back and read this later!

Put your thumb on the tooth, wobble it side to side, once and quickly pull up then push down. It may hurt a little, but it should be out.

If it does hurt pull it back or push it forward then it should come out. If it doesn't come out then try this:

- Get 2-5 pieces of your favorite gum.

- Start chewing one piece, then another, then another, and soon enough, the tooth should fall out!

1. Get a unscented Kellenex and some rubber gloves (maybe very bloody). 2.Wrap the tissue around the tooth and pull! If you wiggled in to much it may be painful because of sore gums!

Get some floss and tie one end to your tooth and the other end to a doorknob.2When you're ready, pull back from the doorknob has hard as you can, then out the tooth.

Get a parent to do it.

If a tooth has fallen out unexpectedly, or if a tooth has been knocked out, seek emergency dental care.

Plaque also causesgingivitis (say: jin-juh-vi-tis), which is gum disease that can make your gums red, swollen, and sore. Dentists say that the minimum time you should spend brushing your teeth is 2 minutes twice a day. Here are some tips on how to brush properly:

Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle against your gumline. Gently brush from where the tooth and gum meet to the chewing surface in short (about half-a-tooth-wide) strokes. Brushing too hard can cause receding gums, tooth sensitivity, and, over time, loose teeth.
Use the same method to brush all outside and inside surfaces of your teeth.
To clean the chewing surfaces of your teeth, use short sweeping strokes, tipping the bristles into the pits and crevices.
To clean the inside surfaces of your top and bottom front teeth and gums, hold the brush almost vertical. With back and forth motions, bring the front part of the brush over the teeth and gums.

Here is some advice for taking care of or preventing gum disease:

Gum disease is inflammation of the gums (gingivae) and damage to the bone that anchors teeth in the jaws. Gum disease is very common, affecting more than half of adults with natural teeth.

If plaque isn't cleaned off your teeth regularly, your gums will become red, swollen and shiny, and they may bleed. This is the early stage of gum disease, called gingivitis. Gingivitis is completely reversible. If the plaque is removed, the gums will recover.

If gingivitis is not treated, the gums may begin to pull away from your teeth, leaving a little pocket around each tooth. These pockets trap plaque that you can't reach with a toothbrush. Over time, plaque hardens to become tartar (calculus). Plaque and tartar build up, causing further irritation.

The irritation gradually spreads to the bone structures around your teeth. As time goes on, the pockets get deeper and more difficult to clean, and the gum and bone may shrink. This is called periodontitis. The shrinking gums may expose some of the roots of your teeth, making them wobbly and sensitive. If left untreated over a number of years, your teeth may fall out, or need to be taken out by a dentist.

Preventing gum disease involves controlling the amount of plaque and tartar that builds up on your teeth. Regular visits to your dentist or hygienist, brushing and flossing your teeth properly and stopping smoking will help to do this.

Gone are the days when choosing dental floss simply meant deciding on waxed or unwaxed. Today your choices include several different kinds of floss materials that vary in shape, thickness, texture, and coating. When you add multiple flavors to that mix, along with ease-of-use features like pre-measured floss and handling aids that hold floss, it can be hard to know what to buy.

Before you make your choice, think about why dentists recommend flossing.

The goal in using dental floss is to clean between the teeth, where brushes can’t reach. You floss to remove plaque, a sticky coating formed by active bacteria that are always present. These bacteria thrive on decaying food, so you also floss to remove any bits of food that get stuck between your teeth. If not removed, plaque leads to tartar formation, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Multiple studies have shown that there is no significant difference in the effectiveness of any particular type of dental floss when it comes to plaque removal and prevention of gingivitis (gum disease). So from that standpoint, it doesn’t matter if you choose waxed, unwaxed, shred-resistant, or woven floss. What matters is that you floss regularly; the best dental floss for your teeth is any kind you will use consistently.

The floss you’re most likely to use daily is the one that is easiest for you to manipulate and is the most comfortable in your mouth. Here are some flossing concerns and the features of available dental floss products that apply to each. Review them to help you decide what kind of floss is likely to suit you best.

1. Getting the right amount of floss.

You need about 18 inches of floss. If eyeballing the proper length challenges you, go for pre-cut or pre-measured floss. Pre-cut floss is packaged in 18-inch lengths instead of being spooled. Pre-measured floss comes out of the container in one long piece, but has short sections of a different color and texture to show you where you should break it off.

2. Wrapping the floss around your fingers.

With proper flossing technique you wrap most of the floss around the fingers of one hand to hold the excess as you use a length of four inches or so to clean your teeth. If you have soft or fragile skin, narrow nylon floss can press into the skin and cause discomfort, so choose wider floss or one made with softer material.

The use of makeshift mouthguards made from rolled cloths, sponges, or pieces of wood have been employed as early as in the 1830s by boxers who recognized the protective advantage of a guard in their mouths. In the 1890, Woolf Krause, a dentist from London, invented a more formal mouthguard for the benefit of the boxers. This indeed helped in reducing lip lacerations and teeth fractures that by 1920, the use of mouthguards for this sport became mandatory.

After boxing, American football was the next sports to use the mouthguards. By 1950, it was observed in the US, that 25-30% of all injuries sustained in the game were dental in nature. Pulling Out a Loose Tooth

Put your thumb on the tooth, wobble it side to side, once and quickly pull up then push down. It may hurt a little, but it should be out.

If it does hurt pull it back or push it forward then it should come out. If it doesn't come out then try this:

It is interesting to note how whitening prodcuts in the U.S. became more popular as Starbucks expanded! I guess dentists owe Starbucks a whole lot. Joking aside, coffee is one of the biggest causes of tooth staining.

So what can you do? I have three words, Milk, milk, milk. A latte is a shot of espresso with the rest of the cup made of milk. This greatly lowers the staining power of the espresso. And lactose intolerance is not an excuse anymore. There are many milk alternativers, including soy milk. What if you don't like milk? Than you should have a bottle of water on hand and rinse (read on).

Tea
There are many alternatives to black tea, which is very potent in staining teeth. Even green tea can have a strong staining effect. What you should drink are herbal teas. White tea is also a great alternative. White tea is made from amateur green tea leaves.

Wine
We all know the staining power of red wine, especially on couches and cocktail dresses! So if you enjoy your wine on a daily basis, then try to stick to white wine as much as possible. Do you still favour red wine? Then, rinse (Read on).

1. Remember, a child's dental care begins before birth.

4. Don't use toothpaste for children under 2.

It starts at home by eating balanced meals, reducing the number of snacks you eat, and correctly using the various dental aids that help control the plaque and bacteria that cause dental disease.

Tooth brushing – Brush your teeth at least twice a day (especially before going to bed at night) with an ADA approved soft bristle brush and toothpaste.

Place the brush at a 45 degree angle to the gums and gently brush using a small, circular motion, ensuring that you always feel the
bristles on the gums.
2.
Brush the outer, inner, and biting surfaces of each tooth.
3.
Use the tip of the brush to clean the inside of the front teeth.
4.
Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

Electric toothbrushes are also recommended. They are easy to use and can remove plaque efficiently. Simply place the bristles of the electric brush on your gums and teeth and allow the brush to do its job, several teeth at a time.

Flossing – Daily flossing is the best way to clean between the teeth and under the gumline. Flossing not only helps clean these spaces, it disrupts plaque colonies from building up, preventing damage to the gums, teeth, and bone.

Take 12-16 inches (30-40cm) of dental floss and wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving about 2 inches (5cm) of floss between the
hands.

Using your thumbs and forefingers to guide the floss, gently insert the floss between teeth using a sawing motion.

Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and under the gumline.Gently move the floss up and down, cleaning the side of each
tooth.

Floss holders are recommended if you have difficulty using conventional floss.

Rinsing – It is important to rinse your mouth with water after brushing, and also after meals if you are unable to brush. If you are using an over-the-counter product for rinsing, it’s a good idea to consult with your dentist or dental hygienist on its appropriateness for you.

Use other dental aids as recommended by your dentist or dental hygienist: Interdental brushes, rubber tip stimulators, tongue cleaners, irrigation devices, fluoride, medicated rinses, etc., can all play a role in good dental home care.
